Betfair Tingle Creek Chase
Grade 1 | GBB Race | Class 1 | 4YO plus
Winner £99,662 - 6 ran
close up, not fluent 2nd, led narrowly 6th, forged clear travelling strongly after 3 out, kept up to work run-in, stayed on well, readily
led, headed narrowly 6th, outpaced by winner after 3 out, ridden 2 out, kept on but no match
chased leaders, left in 3rd 4 out, pushed along and no impression on front pair from 2 out
chased leaders on inner, mistake and pecked 1st, pushed along 3 out and lost touch
chased leaders, fell 6th
A race that became depleted along the way, with a couple of non-runners and a couple of significant fallers, but Jonbon was impressive enough in winning as he did and in a good time also, 2.6s quicker than recorded by L’Eau du Sud in the earlier Henry VIII Novice Chase, with the sectionals confirming both were close to well-run (finishing speed of both winners was 100.3% for final 4f, with Jonbon running 62.71s). The ground was objectively “soft” on this Chase Course, if even more testing on the Hurdle one.
JONBON (c170 here and previously) did not have to do anything he had not done previously but was impressive enough in doing so, recording a good time and just about the best effort by a British-trained jumper so far this season. He raced close up, leading once or twice before going on again after 3 out and soon in command, running on well for pressure in quite a slow finish. His jumping was not faultless, with mistakes at the second and 2 out, but it was a case of him putting himself right more than looking in danger of falling. He missed the Champion Chase at Cheltenham last year but deserves to be right near the top of the pecking order for that this time around.
QUILIXIOS (c159 here and previously) ran creditably under suitable conditions, confirming that he had improved when accounting for Marine Nationale at Naas the time before, but that was not good enough against a high-class rival. He led/disputed much of the way but was steadily outpaced after 3 out, sticking to his task well enough to hold onto second.
JPR ONE (c156 here and previously) found this tougher and ran creditably with the possibility that more speed-favouring conditions will see him resume his progress. He was held up travelling comfortably, lost a few lengths as the winner turned the screw after 3 out, closed briefly on the runner-up but was one paced late on.
SOLNESS (c136 here, 153 previously) had more on his plate and was not equal to it, in touch until going to 3 out (overjumped 1st and not fluent 5th).
EDWARDSTONE (c0 here, 164 previously) had jumped and travelled well enough when falling 4 out, too far out to say what might have happened.
MASTER CHEWY (c0 here, 155 previously) was held up in touch when falling at the 6th.
