One of very few Graded races for staying novice chasers in Ireland this side of the New Year, the Grade 1 over three miles at Leopardstown no longer in the calendar, the field comprised more autumn types than horses that might win at the top level in spring but nonetheless produced a likeable performance from the winner.
OSCARS BROTHER has now peaked on his third start in each of the last two seasons, brought along gradually by his young trainer in each case, and he was ridden forward by Daniel King to make use of his stamina and put the jumping of others under pressure. He didn’t travel as well as the runner-up to the second last but showed resolution to fight that one off, leaving the impression that marathon trips would suit. He may not be up to Grade 1 class but a National of some sort should suit.
KOKTAIL DIVIN stepped up on his chase debut at Down Royal over a shorter trip and jumped well in the main bar diving at the last. He travelled strongly though was inclined to hang in the finish.
BOSSOFTHEBROWNIES was an impressive winner making all on chase debut at Fairyhouse earlier in the month, showing form well in advance to even his best hurdles run, but was surprisingly dropped out here. Perhaps connections were mindful of other strong-staying front-runners in the field but in any case, he travelled well in rear and finished with running to give, staying on steadily from the back of the field.
ROCKY’S DIAMOND had looked an assured jumper in two previous chase starts but struggled to get into a rhythm with the winner hassling him for the lead. He was outpaced before the turn in but is the type of bounce back.
PRENDS GARDE A TOI made his share of mistakes and was pulled up.
