One of the better British sprints in what has been mostly an underwhelming season in that division, with a large field and at least one high-class performer in Lazzat. He underperformed in the event – explicably so, in terms of the draw – but Big Mojo stepped up to be considered almost his equal with this emphatic success. Going stick readings pointed to quicker conditions close to the stand rail and that was borne out in the event, with those drawn 13 and above advantaged and the others, who raced in the centre, something like 10 lb (2 to 3 lengths) inconvenienced. Another feature was a course-record time, assisted by a tailwind but still indicative of ground quicker than the official “good”.
BIG MOJO (119 here, 115 previously) was suited by the return to 6f and put up his best effort yet (though it could be argued he was best in the July Cup in which he finished second), always close up and near the stand rail, travelling comfortably before quickening to lead 2f out, under pressure soon after but readily on top in the final 1f. He is likely to continue to go well when conditions are suitable.
KIND OF BLUE (114 here, 116 previously) was back to form and may do better still next time, improving from towards the rear when slightly hampered well over 1f out and continuing to run on thereafter without closing the gap on the ready winner.
FLORA OF BERMUDA (111 here, 112 previously) was back to her best despite things not panning out perfectly, in mid-field and having to be switched left for a run, joint-fastest (with the winner) in the final 1f.
RAGE OF BAMBY (109 here and previously) showed bright speed to take them along on the stand side until 2f out and faded only late on, running well. She should be effective back at 5f.
LAZZAT (110+ here, 120 previously) was strictly below form but ran creditably in the circumstances, further from the stand rail than ideal but showing good speed to be bang there until over 1f out. He is likely to go much closer next time.
INISHERIN (106+ here, 116 previously) ended up on the wrong part of the track and performed creditably with that in mind, a bit awkward leaving his stall but pushed along to be prominent then outpaced and edging right after 2f out before keeping on again at the death. He is worth a try at 1400m/7f, seemingly not himself on his last visit to France.
TIME FOR SANDALS (102+ here, 112 previously) did well as things unfolded and enters the autumn in good heart, centre to far side and improving there after tracking the pace until no extra late on.
SKY MAJESTY (98+ here, 108 previously) got messed around somewhat and can be forgiven this, slowly into stride but soon in mid-field, bumped 2f out then no extra.
NO HALF MEASURES (93+ here, 113 previously) was short of room a couple of times but also struggling by halfway and not in the same form as at Newmarket.
RUN TO FREEDOM (96 here, 109 previously) was short of room at the start and when trying to improve but found little late in any case.
MY MATE ALFIE (95 here, 112 previously)
BEAUVATIER (92 here, 113 previously) was bumped early and never on terms.
AIN’T NO BODY (87 here, 112 previously) may be best at 5f.
DILIGENT HARRY (85 here, 108 previously)
ANNAF (83 here, 107 previously)
SAYIDAH DARIYAN (77 here, 109 previously)
JAMES’S DELIGHT (77 here, 109 previously)
