Expert Analysis

Conditions were pretty testing for the first big race of the New Year, rain having turned the ground just about “heavy” by this stage, though that was offset somewhat by a steady pace for a long way, the on-screen leaders’ split for the final 4f of 56.05s coming out as a 100.3% finishing speed. There were a couple of under-performers, and the form looks smart rather than any better.

LUCKY PLACE (153 here, 147 previously) had seemed useful yet exposed as a novice last season but has improved each time for valuable successes this term, some way off the top 20f+ hurdlers still but with possible further improvement to come. He travelled comfortably in second before edging ahead approaching the last, ridden out on the run-in. There would be a doubt about him staying 3m, but it seems worth finding out at some point.

GOWEL ROAD (146 here and previously) had the run of things somewhat, grabbing a few lengths at the start and able to dictate just a steady pace much of the way, but rallied having hung left and been headed approaching the last for his fourth successive runner-up spot.

GOLDEN ACE (138+ here, 144 previously) shaped a bit better than the result and is likely to recapture her very best form at an easier 20f or when returned to around 16f, travelling well held up in last, creeping closer and disputing second approaching the last, only to find no extra thereafter. She should hold her own in good handicap company, especially if eased slightly from her current BHA mark of 144.

THUNDER ROCK (127 here, ? previously)

LANGER DAN (121 here, 159 previously) had shaped with promise at Newbury but not really here, held up in touch but beaten pretty quickly 2 out. This trip/ground was suitable so there were no excuses on that score though he has traditionally burst into life around March time.

SALVER (148 here and previously) would have run well and probably finished third but for coming down at the last, held up before making steady headway, switched approaching the last but one paced on the heels of the winner when departing. He looks quite well handicapped off BHA 143 if not punished for this.
