Perth hosts jump racing throughout the summer months with the highlight being the April Festival meeting. Feature races over the meeting include the Future Champions Novices’ Hurdle, the Old Mout Cider Handicap Chase and the Highland National – as its name suggests a long-distance handicap chase over 3m 7f.
Outside of the Festival, Perth’s other big meeting is their fixture in early June, where the feature race is the Perth Gold cup, a Class 2 race run over just short of three miles.
A right-handed circuit of one and a quarter miles, with eight fences to the circuit. The course has sweeping turns and quite a flat running surface. The water jump is in front of the stands and is left out on the run-in, leaving a long run from the last fence to the winning post.
Perth is a lovely track, but a bit deceptive. First impressions are that it’s an easy course, but that’s not quite the case. They tend to start racing a long way from home and that, obviously, tends to test a horse’s stamina. It’s a course that rides very flat and, for that reason, a jockey might be encouraged to kick on too soon. It’s easy to imagine that, once you turn into the home straight, you’re nearly there. But the straight is long and, if you’re not really travelling, the first fence in it can be a bit of a tester.
