Market Rasen Course Guide
Market Rasen stage National Hunt meetings all year round with a strong emphasis on summer jumping. Two of its seasonal highlights, the Listed Summer Plate and the Summer Hurdle, both take place during the same Saturday meeting in mid-July.
Run over two and a half miles, the Summer Plate is the richest race run at the course and one of the highlights of the summer jumping season. The 2008 renewal went to the Peter Bowen-trained Snoopy Loopy, who that autumn won the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock Park.
Right handed, sharp with minor undulations. Generally favours nippy types (though the ground can get testing), plenty of races being won by those who quicken best on the run to the first obstacle in the home straight. Fairly easy fences, with the third last catching out fewer in recent seasons than used to be the case.
Not many courses put such a premium on the ability to travel through a race as Market Rasen. Even though it’s relatively flat, it’s a hard place to make up a lot of ground. You can turn into the straight thinking you’ve loads of time to make a challenge but, if others quicken away from you at that point, you struggle to get back to them. If you kick from the turn in, though, it’s a fair way home and you almost look up with a furlong left and ask yourself ‘am I not there yet’. The home straight really is l-o-n-g.
